hype williams - new jersey house sound vol.1 (via pollyjacobsen)

“Hype Williams” is a London duo riding high on recent praise. Their latest release is a Single of the Week on Boomkat and their previous Untitled LP had a massively glowing review in the last issue of Wire. That review labeled their lo-fi, spun-out aesthetic as “hazy nihilism.” Their video channel has quite a few songs and videos (my favourite), most of which seem to prominently feature a sort of high-on-weed moodiness to them. The home movie feel to the actual recorded videos further adds to that.

The above mix, “new jersey house sound vol.1”, seems to revel in that mind-set. I can just imagine the smoky suburban New Jersey basement with dirty carpets and a giant wood paneled television tube playing “Castlevania” (sampled extensively) on a yellowed and crusty Nintendo Entertainment System. They might be from London and not New Jersey, but I’d like to think those experiences are universal.
