Lazer Sword “Beast’s Reprise” (via InnovativeLeisureRec)
The new Lazer Sword album is a sometimes eclectic but often great mix of hip hop, wonky beats, dubstep, chiptunes, synthesizers, and radical album art.

It was the album art that got my attention in the first place (and some mild buzz) but after digging into it I came away very pleasantly surprised. The rather AFX-ish acid like synth heavy opener “Tar” came as an instant shock after hearing the more chiptune-infused wonky beats of Web Swag and the less classifiable bubbling of the James Earl Jones sampling “Surf News”. But despite the fluctuating styles and myriad influences being shown here it never loses cohesiveness, even during the various vocal tracks. Very recommended.
Expanded edition now available for download at boomkat.
(Probably one reason why I enjoyed it so much is the realization that one half of Lazer Sword is Low Limit, who had one of my absolute favourite chiptune-influenced bangers from last year which I’ve plugged multiple times already: Inspirational Jumpsuit.)
